"Right across the black warrior river in Northport is a diner called the City Cafe that's been here for over 80 years. Now, the current owner, Joe Barger, ate here as a youngster, worked here in high school and bought the place in 1974. They open at 4 am and serve breakfast until 10:20. The lunch menu kicks in at 9:30 and they shut down at 3:30. I timed it just perfect to have a little bit of both. Now the menu features different meats and vegetables for each day of the week. I was thrilled to find that one of Friday's selections was an old favorite of mine: fried chicken livers with onions and gravy. Add to that macaroni and cheese, black eyed peas and some green beans and a breakfast biscuit with fried bologna. Roll, Todd, Roll."
